Thermoplastic Vulcanizate TPV
|
|
TPV's are most commonly based on blends of EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) and PP (polypropylene)
TPV'S are generally either partially or fully vulcanised- the latter are far the most important in terms of performance and processing characteristics. The NexPrene and Elastron V TPV ranges are fully dynamically vulcanized
TPV's are manufactured by a dynamic vulcanization process. The "rubber" (EPDM) phase is cross- linked (vulcanized) during the melt phase as it is mixed with the thermoplastic (PP) phase.
The resultant morphology is quite unique and imparts full thermoplastic processing (multiple recycling) with outstanding rubber-like performance.
Like other TPE's though true thermoplastic alloys NexPrene and NexPrene and Elastron V
are phase separated systems - at room temperature the continuous phase (PP)
is hard and the other dispersed phase (EPDM) is soft and elastomeric.
The resultant fully homogenous products exhibit excellent compression set characteristics
over a wide temperature range and outstanding chemical resistance, particularly
to fluids found in the automotive environment.
The recently introduced NexPrene and Elastron V range demonstrate improvements on existing products by way of their superior tensile strength (10%) and tear strength (30%) at any given hardness.
NexPrene and Elastron V are available in a hardness range Shore 35A to 50D and can be processed by all thermoplastic methods. In addition to the standard grades a number of speciality types are available with a tailor made property profile.
NexPrene and Elastron V are available in a full range of bright colours or can be in-line masterbatched due to their very clean and consistent natural colour.
As thermoplastics NexPrene and Elastron V offer a wide degree of design freedom resulting
in their widespread use replacements for thermoset rubber in automotive components.
Their low specific gravity, very fast cycling and integration possibilities
offer major cost saving opportunities.
